On Sunday 16 August 1987 Northwest Airlines N312RC c/n 48090 crashed on a road at take-off from Detroit airport. first flight : 1981 total airframe hours : 14928 engines : P&W JT8D-217 flight NW255 with 6 crew and 149 passengers from Detroit (DTW) to Phoenix (PHX). All on-board the aircraft died except for one 4 year old girl, but seriously injured. In addition there were 2 fatalities on the ground, they sat in a car that was hit by the airplane on the highway. Cause : airplane was not configured correctly for take-of., the crew did not follow the checklist completely. The aircraft stalled immediately after getting airborne. B-2103 landing at Hong Kong (HKG) , 11 October 1993

Tuesday 26 October 1993 China Eastern airlines MD-82 B-2103 c/n 49355 flight MU5398 from Shenzhen (SZX) to Fuzhou Yixu airport (FOC) with 9 crew and 71 passengers. Approached runway 08, but was to high and not on the centreline. At 20m above the ground the pilot tried to go around but the aircraft continued to sink and then a forced landing was attempted touching down 1983m passed the threshold of the runway. The aircraft overshoot, broke in three and coming to rest in a pond 385m past the runway. 2 passengers died in the crash and 10 were wounded.

Saturday 13 November 1993 China Northern MD-82 B-2141 c/n 49849 flight CJ6901 from Beijing (PEK) to Urumqi airport (URC), China with 10 crew and 92 passengers. Autopilot selected in incorrect modus with to high constant sink-rate when approaching Urumqi apt. runway 25 in foggy conditions. The aircraft hit a power line 1.5 km before the runway and then crash landed in a field. Many passengers and crew could get out of the crashed plane before it was consumed by fire. But 12 people died and 30 were wounded. The flight crew did not understand the audio-warning’s “Glideslope”, “Sink rate and “pull up”. Tuesday 1 June 1999 American Airlines MD-82 N215AA c/n 49163 flight AA1420 from Dallas (DFW) to Little Rock (LIT) with 6 crew and 139 passengers. Approaching Little Rock 22L in darkness with severe thunderstorms in the vicinity. Due to windshear the crew diverted to RW 04R. ILS approach with limited sight due to the thunderstorms. Landed in heavy rain and overshot. 11 people died in the crash and 80 wounded. Tuesday 7 May 2002 China Northern airlines MD-82 B-2138 c/n 49522 flight 6163 from Beijing (PEK) to Dalian apt. (DLC) with 9 crew and 112 passengers. During descent to Dalian the flight crew reported a fire on board after which contact was lost. The aircraft crashed in sea 20 km from Dalian. first flight : 1990 airframe hrs : 26000 cycles : 16000 engines : P&W JT8D-217A. The aircraft was license built in China by SAIC.

All on board died in the crash.

Authorities blamed the crash on a fire set by a passenger who bought seven insurance policies before boarding the flight, insuring his life for $170,000. He had brought one or more water bottles filled with gasoline on board and ignited the gasoline on board the aircraft. Location : +- 2km : 38°57’08.97”N 121°48’30.38”E

Tuesday 30 November 2004 Lion Air MD-82 PK-LMN c/n 49189 flight 583 from Jakarta (CGK) to Solo City (SOC), Indonesia with 7 crew and 156 passengers. The aircraft landed with a 13 knot tailwind component. There was heavy rain and the aircraft aquaplaned on more than 3mm water on the runway. The spoilers deployed but retracted again probably due to wrong power setting. The aircraft overrun the 2600m long runway 26 and ended at a metal fence of a cemetery. 25 people died in the crash. first flight : 1984 Airframe hrs : 56674 cycles : 43940 engines : P&W JT8D-217C

McDonnel Douglas MD-82 | West Caribbean Airways | HK-4737X | MD-82 at the gate

Tuesday 16 August 2005 West Caribbean Airways MD-82 HK-47374X c/n 49484. Flight YH708 from Panama City (PTY) to Fort de France (FDF), Martinique with 8 crew and 152 passengers. The aircraft was cruising at FL330 at Mach 0.76 the speed steadily decreased. The engines flamed out during descent. Unclear why power of the engines was lost (engine stall combination with icing) At FL250 (7620m) at 150 IAS kts (278 km/hr) the stall warning activated. The flight crew could not control the aircraft and it crashed in a swamp near Machiques in Venezuela. The entire descent from FL330 only took approx. 3 mins and 30 sec (average 2875 m/min). All on board died in the crash. Sunday 16 September 2007 One-Two-Go airlines HS-OMG c/n 49183 leased from Orient Thai Airlines. Flight OG269 from Bangkok (DMK) to Phuket (HKT) with 7 crew and 123 passengers. ILS approach to Phuket RW27 in strong winds. Loosed speed on final approach, go around initiated but the auto-throttle reduced power to idle below 50ft. The TA/GA switch (take-off / Go-around) was never pressed. Flight JK5022 from Madrid (MAD) to Las Palmas (LPA) with 6 crew and 166 passengers. Took-off from RW 36L with flaps set incorrectly and stalled at 40 ft height. Crash-path was 1093m long ending in the small De la Vega stream were it caught fire. 154 people died in the crash, 18 were seriously wounded. first flight : 01 nov.1993
